SPECIALTY INSTITUTES
Our
specialty institutes offer full- or
half-day professional development sessions focusing on the unique
needs of mathematics teachers, English/language arts teachers, or
career and technology high school teachers. The institutes are adapted to
meet the needs of staff professionals within a department or other
specialized group. We are constantly developing new institutes. If
your need is not addressed by the offerings below, we would be
happy to discuss creating a new institute with you.
INSTITUTE TOPICS
I. Open-Response Writing
The “Open-Response
Writing” workshop focuses on how to design writing lessons, assignments, and prompts that help students
improve the quality of their answers to open or constructed
response questions. The workshop is designed for teachers in all subject areas,
department heads, principals, supervisors, curriculum
committee members, and special educators.
Participants
will closely
examine
questions found on state tests and graded student responses.
Teachers will participate in a variety of activities
designed to help their students:

curriculum committee members, special educators in grades 2-12.
III. Career and Technology
High Schools
Strategies for using the Five Types of Writing in shop and
academic classes, including using writing to help students master
content and retain technical vocabulary. How to quickly grade
papers using Focus Correction Areas. Twenty-six great,
ready-to-use writing assignments.
Audience:
Career &
Tech high school teachers in all subject areas, department chairs,
principals, supervisors, curriculum committee members, special
educators.

Teaching
Essential Focus Correction Areas (FCAs)
Activity-based strategies for
teaching Focus Correction Areas (FCAs). How to use and apply
essential FCAs during revision and editing.
Audience:
English/language arts (ELA) teachers, ELA department chairs,
principals, supervisors, curriculum committee members, special
educators in grades K-8.
